-ON Power Plant Geothermal Exhibition

Experience first-hand how green, sustainable energy is produced at one of the largest single-site geothermal power plants on the planet, Hellisheiði ON Power Plant.

Visitors to the geothermal exhibition are presented with a unique and exciting opportunity to learn about geothermal power and sustainable energy in Iceland. Visitors can see into the turbine halls of the plant, enjoy interactive and educational displays, and learn about our partnership with Carbfix, a leading solution for CO2 storage. You will experience first-hand how electricity is produced for the national grid and hot water for the capital region.

-Kerið Crater Lake

The crater Kerið formed about 6,500 years ago and lies at the northern end of a row of craters known as Tjarnarhólar. It is oval, about 270 m long, 170 m wide, and 55 m deep: the depth of the water at the bottom varies between 7 and 14 m. According to an old tradition, a rise in the water level here is accompanied by a corresponding fall in the pond on Búrfell in Grímsnes and vice versa.

-Lunch - Friðheimar/Farmers Bistro

Friðheimar
Tomatoes are the theme of Friðheimar cuisine – and that’s not surprising, since three different varieties of tomato are cultivated in the greenhouses, where food is served among the tomato plants. A unique food experience – come and enjoy it!

Farmers Bistro
On the menu, at Farmers Bistro we present the fascinating world of mushrooms, bell peppers, and other vegetables we grow on our farm.

-Geysir Geothermal Area

One of the great natural attractions of Iceland is the home to the Great Geysir and Strokkur hot springs. While the Great Geysir has been dormant since 1916, Strokkur erupts approximately every 5-10 minutes, shooting boiling water up in the air. The area’s geothermal features include bubbling mud pots and smaller geysers.

-Gullfoss Waterfall

Gullfoss is two separate waterfalls; the upper one has a drop of 11 meters and the lower one 21 meters. The rock of the river bed was formed during an interglacial period.

Water flows over Gullfoss at an average rate of 109 cubic meters per second. The heaviest floods have recorded a flow of 2000 cubic meters per second. During the summer, the flow is 130 cubic meters per second, which would take only 3 seconds to fill this building. People were eager to exploit the power potential of Gullfoss, and many plans for hydroelectric developments on the river Hvítá have been proposed.

-The Secret Lagoon

The Secret Lagoon, known to locals as Gamla Laugin or old pool, is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It was made in 1891 at Hverahólmi, a geothermal area near Flúðir.

The lagoon is filled with natural hot water flowing from close hot springs. Warm, clean, and rich in sulfur, the water stays 38-40° Celsius or 100-104° Fahrenheit all year round.

-Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds historical and cultural significance as it was the site of Iceland’s first parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD. Besides its historical importance, Þingvellir is known for its stunning geological features, including a rift valley formed by the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates moving apart.
